A blend of the old and the new, Clifton Hill Primary School comprises a large, original 1874 Victorian building, a converted 'boot' and later 'organ' factory, a large multipurpose, library and music facility constructed in 2011 and a purpose built science centre constructed in 2013.  The Centre is staffed by an experienced specialist Leading Teacher.


A new library was built at CHPS in 2011 with Building Education Revolution funds. This provided a bright and spacious area to house the collection of picture books, novels and information books which support both the recreational needs and curriculum support for students and staff. It also provides space for small group work away from the classroom with support staff. Teacher reference materials also find a space here. The library is well-resourced with computers and up-to-date borrowing systems.

The library is staffed on alternate days by a trained teacher-librarian and an experienced teacher, who both have a passion for children's literature and a broad knowledge of the collection in the library. Students visit the library each week to borrow, and they are also welcome to borrow before or after school or during their lunch break.

Significant funds have been allocated to the library which allows us to continually develop the collection with new and exciting titles to read. The Premier's Reading Challenge is coordinated through the library each year. Book Week, which has been part of the school calendar for over sixty years, sees us bring a number of authors and illustrators into the school to bring to life the creation of children's literature.



Students with iPads

At CHPS we aim to develop digitally literate, life-long learners who are able to adapt to their changing world. Information Communication Technology (ICT) plays an integral role in this vision.

ICT is an interdisciplinary domain, focusing on providing students with the tools to improve their learning and to enrich their learning environment. Technology is not taught as a stand-alone subject; it is integrated within the broader curriculum and used as a tool to enhance learning outcomes. ICT skill acquisition is sequentially taught, but in an integrated manner. The school offers a Mac and PC platform across the school. Students in grades 3-6 are part of a 1:1 iPad program and students from Foundation — grade 2 access class sets of iPads. Classrooms and the library also have networked desktop pcs enabling students to seamlessly move between the Mac and PC platform with access to a broad range of software that facilitates creativity, high levels of engagement and allows students to work individually and collaboratively. The school has wireless network throughout and classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards. An important component of ICT learning and student safety and wellbeing is the teaching of cybersafety and responsible online behaviour. We help students understand the implications of the use of ICT and their social and ethical responsibilities as users of ICT.
